The college basketball season is one of the most exciting sports seasons, and it is about to tip off. A new wave of fabulous players mixed with familiar faces will surely make this season special. The defending champs, the Florida Gators, aim to defend their trophy. However, all 351 other Division I teams are preparing to take the Gators down. Time will tell how things will play out in the world of college basketball.
College basketball has drastically changed due to the transfer portal and NIL (Name Image Likeness). The transfer portal allows players to leave their previous school and explore other schools to potentially play for in the next season. The transfer portal allows players from smaller schools to showcase their skills at the top level, which is one reason the transfer portal is beneficial. However, with NIL, players are able to get paid for their efforts through the school’s boosters, which provide money to the university, which can be used to pay players. This allows the most popular and biggest market teams to have an advantage when going after players in the transfer portal.
This leads to inequality in the college basketball world. The best teams are able to pay more for the highest-level players, making their teams even better. The historically lower caliber teams are not bringing in as much money, causing them to be at a disadvantage as they are not able to outspend the top teams for top players. The NIL has been a hot topic among experts in college basketball. With the unlevel playing field, March Madness (the playoffs for college basketball) had significantly fewer upsets last year. This is because the better players from the smaller schools can transfer to the larger and better schools, making the top teams even harder to beat. This made fans unhappy because picking upsets and watching previously unknown teams beat some of the biggest powerhouses was one of the reasons that made college basketball great. While there seem to be flaws within college basketball, fans still look forward to great matchups and wild moments, causing there to be extreme excitement about the upcoming season.
Next, after a historic year, the SEC (Southeastern Conference) will try to build on their success as the SEC fielded two of the four teams in the Final Four, which is the game that is played to determine who will make the championship match. Building off that, Florida, the national champion, plays in the SEC, which further shows the SEC’s dominance. Other favorites for the upcoming year from the SEC include Kentucky, Arkansas, Auburn, and more. National powerhouses such as Duke, Houston, UConn, and more will look to dethrone the current champions, the Florida Gators.
When asked about who he thought would win the championship in the upcoming season, Rohan Sandhu, a Junior at MV, stated, “I think Duke will win it all next year because they have another talented freshman class.” Duke and many other great programs will square off against each other all season long.
With headline tournaments and primetime games, the season is sure to not disappoint. Capped off with one of the most entertaining tournaments in the world to crown one singular winner, each game will be filled with energy, passion, and fire.
