Winter is coming to an end, which means another exciting season of boys’ tennis is upon us. After the team came off a great season last year and pushed their way to the second round of NCS, many are expecting another run into the playoffs.
However, like every other high school team, impactful seniors will graduate, leaving the younger classmen having to step up. The team lost six seniors last year, leaving many holes to fill, potentially changing the trajectory of the season. As well as getting promoted to Division 1 in EBAL, the team is challenged to an even greater extent. Underclassmen will be expected to compete in higher singles and doubles positions, as well as take on a greater responsibility in supporting the team.
The season began March 2nd, with a pre-season tournament at Stanford, where they will compete against the best teams in the nation, and prepare for matches to come. During the league, the team will play six singles and three doubles against other high school competitors, all with one goal: qualifying for the EBAL playoffs.
Despite key seniors graduating, this year’s team has emphasized the importance of determination and trust, committed to continuing the tradition of success.
“EBAL division one for tennis is going to be very challenging. Teams like Amador and Cal have produced D1 players multiple years in a row, and their teams have not lost that many seniors,” said Junior Caden Wight. “The main goal this season is to win EBAL and go as far as we can in NCS.”
This season will be challenging for the Mustangs. With the move to Division 1 EBAL, the strength of their schedule will increase drastically, and more experienced and stronger teams will make the journey to the playoffs very difficult. Matches will be a lot closer and decided by a few points to earn a spot in the postseason.
Although the team lost six seniors, the players are still determined to compete. With returning players guiding new varsity members, the team is focused on building confidence and improving talent.
“I think Division 1 EBAL will be a difficult experience, but I trust that our team can come out on top. If we can work together to improve our game as a team, the season will be a success,” said Senior Philip Matei. “Since this is my last year, I am very motivated to improve my net game and give my all.”
As the Mustangs get ready to compete in Division 1, the journey will not be easy. But this program has fought its way into this division and is always ready for a new challenge. As the season progresses, Monte Vista will look to go deep into another postseason run.
