The UEFA Champions League (UCL) is the pinnacle of club football in the world’s most popular sport, soccer. This highly coveted annual Champions League trophy is awarded to the undisputed best team in Europe. To earn a spot in the UCL, a club must first qualify by being a top-ranked team in its personal league. This qualification opens the door to play against elite clubs from different leagues and nations, presenting a unique challenge since it is often difficult to anticipate the playing style of unfamiliar international opponents. Unlike domestic play, where teams face each other regularly, many Champions League matchups involve opponents who have not met on the pitch in years.
Arsenal Football Club is a professional football club based in Islington, London, known for its rich history as one of the most successful and supported teams in English football. They compete in the Premier League and have a traditional rivalry with Tottenham Hotspur, known as the North London Derby. This year Arsenal has the greatest chance to win because of many factors, like recent performance and overall, no weaknesses in their system. Similar to the Champions League, the CIF award is given to the best soccer team in the state of California. This year, Monte Vista has a great chance of competing for it.
Last year’s winner, Paris Saint-Germain, won the UCL and was crowned the best team in the world for winning the league. Star player and striker for PSG, Ousmane Dembélé, won the Ballon d’Or. The award for best player in the world, and was a major part in the team’s success this year as well, making them the best club in the world in 2024. In 2025, Arsenal has been performing the greatest out of all the teams in the world, shown in the countless wins in recent results. After last season’s thrilling championship, there are many different views on who will win the trophy this year. People believe some great contenders are Liverpool, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, and Manchester City.
James Finkel, a Junior on the MV JV soccer team, said, “I think Arsenal will win the Champions League because… Arsenal has proven to have the fewest weaknesses. Since their newest signing Victor Gyokeres, a striker from the Portuguese league, they…[have looked] unstoppable.”
Arsenal has had trouble the past few years with a main striker that will score goals. Arsenal has performed well in many years prior, and this could be the year where they finally see results because of their recent results. Right now, Arsenal is in first place in the Premier League and tied for first in the Champions League qualifiers. Under Mikel Arteta (the manager of Arsenal), the team has built a reputation for resilience, flair, and strong defensive structure, often achieving one of the best expected goals against. In the past year, Barcelona has defeated Real Madrid three out of three times and has dominated La Liga. Barcelona has debatably the best offense in the world with their star players Lamine Yamal, Ralphina Dias Belloli, and Robert Lewandowski. Barcelona’s weakness is their defense because they struggle against other teams with great offenses like Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City.
The CIF award is equal to the Champions League for soccer in the state of California. Winning the state championship could show that you are the best team in the state, and Monte Vista is on track for a great chance to win it this year because of the great coaches and players. With the help of MV soccer students, even though offense is great to have, defense wins championships, so Arsenal will win the Champions League because of their lack of weaknesses and dominant recent performances.
