As the leaves start to fall they paint the town of Danville in hues of orange, brown, and red. But there’s a different kind of excitement brewing in the air, the long-awaited start of the upcoming basketball season. Many students have shared their excitement in the past few weeks. Sports play a large role in Monte Vista’s community, bringing our student body together to support the various teams.
The hard-fought games of the boys’ basketball team during the 22-23 season have set expectations for an exhilarating 23-24 season. The team had an impressive record dominating opponents like De La Salle and Oak Ridge. At the same time, close games against Dougherty Valley and St. Mary showed the team’s competitive spirit and determination. Lastly, the loss against our rival school San Ramon Valley only fueled the players’ hunger for success and domination.
“It’s an experience that brings together students, athletes, and faculty together,” said senior team member Alex Long
After many players from last year’s team graduated or transferred to other schools, the current team is still ready to shine.
“Last year seniors had a major impact on the team. Senior team member Tyler Vierra said “We for sure miss Sean’s energy and Josh’s leadership but we have had players step up and fill roles which is great to see.”
So far, the team is off to a hot start. As of December 14, the men’s team is currently 9-0 in addition to being ranked 26th in the state.
“Although last years seniors will be missed” Said senior player Trevor Viera, “ the student section can have a big impact on the game by getting into the other teams head and giving players energy and motivation to win the game”
Some of the fans’ favorite element of basketball season is the tradition of dressing up for the games. Each game has a different theme, turning the bleachers into an array of different colors. The themes vary from red, black, and white-outs, Monte Vista’s signature colors, to neon and Christmas nights. When students stick to themes it transforms the stands into a sea of themed outfits and excitement. Players emphasize how the fans’ support can create a sense of additional motivation and a sense of being loved as their friends and family come to support them.
“The atmosphere in the gym is electric with the energy of fans in school colors, ready to cheer on the team.” Said senior team member Alex Long.
“It’s not just about the sport; it’s about creating memories and a sense of community, ” Said senior basketball fan Natalia Mcgowan “Getting ready for game nights with my friends and seeing everyone’s outfits creates an extra excitement.”
