Since the opening of the Workday Student Center, talented artists have had the opportunity to display their art throughout the building.

The entryway to the library is filled with student masterpieces. Sketches and ink drawings have been placed up and down the glass walls for students to admire, along with sculptures on shelves. The pieces remain nameless, leaving a curious wonder as to who the artists are.

Students such as senior Kendall Porterfield, senior Elizabeth Sangalang, and senior Nishant Malhotra have their art hung up in the library.

“Having my art displayed in the new Student Center is truly an honor,” Sangalang, who is co- president of the National Art Honor Society said. “I am proud to see not only my own work displayed, but having other students represented as well.”

Sangalang’s sketch, a pair of eyes and a brush, took her several weeks to complete.

“It feels good. I feel like art is being recognized more than it has been in the past.” Porterfield, a club member said. “It’s cool because it’s not just students who are in art that can show their talent.”

Porterfield is not taking an art class this year, however her art was still selected to be shown in the student center. She created a charcoal sketch of a girl.

“It’s pretty cool, just because a lot of kids are finally getting recognized for their talent.” Malhotra said. His art piece took him three days to complete. His art piece is the sketch of the Taj Mahal with smoke surrounding it.

Other Monte Vista students that have wandered through the building have been able to see the art in the located in the library.

“I think it’s great that the student center offers students the chance to show off their artistic skills,” senior Andrew Ruskin said. “There’s so much talent here at Monte Vista, and I think that the student center gives people the chance to show their individuality.”

*Some of the art on display was contributed by the National Art Honor Society- a club on campus. It is run by Elizabeth Sangalang and Nishant Malhotra- For the first exhibit we featured all of the work that students offered as we had space and felt it was a good way to open the space. These pieces are hanging at the entrance to the Library on the glass walls. Many students prepared and hung the works and Zandra Sturtevant prepared the show list of students. There are also paper self- portraits and clay works from Mrs. Vergis’ class, photos from Mr. Soucy’s classes, Dance posters from Mrs. Gordon, Drama ones from Mr. Connor and various posters and photos from both Mr. Kohilha and Mr. Cloyd- All of the work is made by or features students because the essence of the new Workday center is students. Most will be rotated so we can showcase more students.Art students are as eclectic and varied as their art. As Fine Art teachers we are very excited to have this new space to share the talents of our students.
