Student opinions on national news

When it comes to national news, senior students have strong opinions about what is going on in our country. Syria and the government shut down are popular items that are in the news today.

The Government Shutdown

Senior Kevin Gallagher, member of the Young Republicans club, believes that the government shutdown is sad and ridiculous that our congress cannot agree and make compromises.

“I believe that as such an advanced society (and government) we should be able to work through problems like this,” Gallagher said.

However, Gallagher does believe that there will be a somewhat positive outcome to this issue in the near future.

“I think that the outcome will be that eventually it will all blow over and we will forget about this whole government fiasco,” Gallagher said.

Other students also have opinions on national news, such as senior Chloe Winn, an AP Government student who believes that the government shutdown is “completely unfair to the American public”.

“We elected officials to protect us and they can’t even come to an agreement, which is directly affecting us,” Winn said.

“The objective of our government is to be the voice of the people as we are a democracy,” Winn said. “They need to put an end to the government gridlock and be more concerned with the people”.

Syria

Shifting to the Syrian conflict, senior Zack Bailey believes that the United States “had no business to get involved”.

“What made it worse was that Obama made the statement that we would take ‘immediate action’ and ended up doing nothing,” Bailey said, “It shows weakness in our politics in the sense that we didn’t go through with our threat”.

Bailey believes that the outcome will be that “more tyrannical dictators will feel they can get away with these types of things because they have seen that the United States didn’t go through with their threats.”
