The majority of the Monte Vista teachers walked the picket lines on Thursday and Friday as San Ramon Valley teachers held a strike to gather support for their case.

The first day of striking came on Thursday, when San Ramon teachers conincided their walk out along with Fremont’s planned strike. Only 100 Monte Vista students showed up for classes, with 156 and 300 students at San Ramon and Cal High respectively.

District officials say that 75 percent of the teachers were on strike, while union officials claim 82 percent were out. The teachers are protesting against a proposed 3.5% salary increase, while they have asked for a 7 percent hike. The district and union have been battling over this issue for months, and a solution has yet to be obtained.

The strike is far from over, with recent development pushing the two sides farther from settlement, and closer to more strike days.
