A not so merry christmas

Love or hate it, it’s Christmas time and that means holiday themed movies, and decorations everywhere you look. For a single holiday, there are tons of major hits within the film industry. Whether you prefer How the Grinch Stole Christmas or the Home Alone series, the stereotypical holiday movies are out there by the dozens.

During this time of year, the movies that will be released, are the heart-warming, feel good stories. But there are definitely Christmas movies that stray from the holiday season’s popular movies. Believe it or not, there are actually Christmas horror movies such as Jack Frost or Christmas Evil. Though these movies lack modern-age acting and special features, there are definitely those who adore these films.

The movie that will give you the “What did I just see,” moment is Elves. In this movie you don’t get the cute and cuddly Santa’s Elves or even the agile and strong elves from the Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit trilogies. No sir, you get the killer Christmas demon elves who help conspire with Neo-Nazis. It all begins with a teenage girl named Kristen who accidentally cuts her hand at an “Anti-Christmas” pagan ritual awakening an ancient demonic Christmas elf. Being the last pure-blooded Aryan, Kristen is sought out by the Neo-Nazis to be kidnapped to help spread the half human half elf race.

A much more popular genre of Christmas movies that strays from the holiday season movies, include Christmas comedies.A Popular modern favorite being Elf, starring Will Ferrell. In this film, one of Santa’s elves finds out he is really a human and his misadventures take him through New York City, all dressed up in attire that only fits in the North Pole. A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas is another film that didn’t hit big with the critics but the hysterical stunts that are pulled off won’t be found anywhere else. These films make fun of the popular festive events that go on during this time of year, but manage to tie in the feel-good endings

Bruce Willis seems to have single handedly created action movies that take place during Christmas time in his movie Die Hard. The constant action, and swearing is very appealing to the action fanatics and all guys. In the film, New York Police officer John McClane is driven to Nakatomi Plaza on Christmas Eve for a company Christmas party. When terrorist Hans Gruber and his heavily group armed seize the tower and hold hostages in an attempt to steal $660 million dollars, John McClane is the only one who can stop him.

Animated films are a popular choice for Holiday films. But Tim Burton manages to take even the brightest and lightest holiday and turn it dark The Nightmare Before Christmas. In a town circulated around Halloween, Jack Skellington is sick of the Halloween festival his neighbors put on every year. While being lead by his ghost dog Zero, Jack winds up finding his way to a door that leads to a town circulated around Christmas. In attempt to bring Christmas to Halloween Town he almost destroys the Christmas as well as Santa Claus.

“Little Mermaid,” Senior Mckay Butler replied when asked about his favorite Christmas movie.

So whether you’re a fan of action packed Christmas movies like Die hard, or Christmas Demon Elves who are cool with the Nazis, there definately the non-mainstream holiday movies out there for you.
